My brother-in-law, Peter Harding Rolls, has been a wonderfully expert and successful fly fisher all his life.
He caught some beautiful 30 lbs salmon in Tillamook Bay when he visited us in 1988. His arthritis now makes it difficult for him to tie his flies. Thank you for some good information. I've been thinking about making some kind of large arbor (I''m a little bit of a woodworker), but I've not found a model to work from. Any ideas.

Been tying crappy lo

Been tying crappy looking flies for years! I guess I really have something! All kidding aside, I actually take a piece of Velcro and rub it against any fly that i'm about to use just to rough it up a bit -guaranteed 50% more hits and landed fish. I've always found that the flies that resemble what it is that they are supposed to imitate work much better than flies which look exactly like what they're imitating.

Hi Martin, Wonderful article you have written, well done. I have bought a Blackwater telescopic spin & fly combo rod. No instructions receive to set for newbe like myselself. I would like to know what lenght of fly line shall I use, what line weight will be suitable for my rod? please help me to select leader and tippet. The instructions on the rod I found are "fly #6-7 line weight,spin 2-20g casting weight". My Fly reel is PPO622 Graphite Pro 7/8, spin reel is shakespeare Dynamite RD capicity 260m of 4lb. This means that more information for spin but not enough for fly reel set up.

I've been using a jacket from Drift Creek Outdoors and it has been great. No leaks, simple and functional design, and reasonable price. I did quite a bit of research before buying a jacket and found out some interesting facts. Any jacket that has seam seal taping is not to be put in the dryer, EVER, no matter what the manufacturer says. Jackets should not be machine washed either. The wash cycle removes the DWR (Durable Water Resistant) coating. This coating is what causes the water to 'bead off'. Many jacket manufaturers tout their product as 'care free', you can wash and dry them. WRONG! I have found that soaking the dirty jacket in cold water with detergent, rinsing, and hang dry is the best way to make it last longer. Be wary of campanies that say you can wash and dry their jackets, they are just trying to make a sale by promising you the world. The Tundra Tech Xtreme Guide jacket was recommended to me by a guide in Alaska, and Alaska has the most challenging weather for a fisherman, in my opinion. It has held up to every test I could put it through.

Thanks guys, I will keep you posted how I go this winter on the Tongariro with some tube flies I have bought from an online shop.
I have only used the spey rod for nymphing so far and have had some good results. I am even slowly getting the hang of the double spey cast!

Very nice presentaio

Very nice presentaion. Although the Maynard's Marvel pictured does not have a golden pheasant crest wing as the pattern calls for. Being very difficult to work with a travel steam iron on a low heat setting is the trick for taming those nasty yellow feathers into submission. I was sworn to secrecy on this, but maybe it will help out a few frustrated individuals out there. Many fond memoriers were rekindled browsing through these patters. Ora Smith and my father Don Stratton were great friends and collegues.

Hi. it is not frosty fiber, it is krystal twisted hair or something like that produced by local tackle manufacturer. But I would say there are plenty of variants sold all over the world.
By the way, I just came back from Denmark and this fly in salmon pink colour caught 6 or 7 fish. Unfortunately only 2 were caught by me :-) Fish were not interested in our flies and there were anglers everywhere. But it was very nice trip indeed.

I laughed when I saw

I laughed when I saw this page. Years ago a friend and I were tying what we called "Hammered Mess" flies - ones intended to be as ugly as possible and still be recognizeable. We concluded that you had to actually be a good tier to make them as bad as we did, because you had to know every mistake and intentionally make them. What a treat to see something similar years later online!
